The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) is one of the largest nonprofit, regional conservation centers in the United States, specializing in the preservation and conservation of paper-based materials for collections-holding institutions.

NEDCC’s Paper Conservation Laboratory is staffed by professional conservators, including specialists in the conservation treatment of photographs, oversize works on paper, and parchment. Paper conservation procedures range from minimal stabilization to complex treatments. Paper and photograph conservators also perform collection-level assessments.

The Center’s Book Conservation Laboratory staff is skilled in treating both manuscript and printed bound materials dating from the eleventh through the twenty-first centuries. The professional book conservators have expertise in treating volumes bound in a variety of materials including leather, cloth, parchment, and paper and offer a full range of treatment options. The Center’s book conservators also conduct collection-level assessments.

NEDCC’s Imaging Services staff members are expertly trained in the proper handling of fragile materials. The Center’s Digitization Studios specialize in creating highest-quality digitization of rare and valuable works on paper, as well as black-and- white negatives, color film dye-base images, lantern slides, glass plates, and photographic prints. The Scanning department specializes in scanning X-rays for museums and other collections-holding institutions.

NEDCC’s Preservation Services department offers consultation and training to help institutions preserve collections as a whole through collections care and preservation planning. The department conducts general preservation assessments; presents workshops, conferences, and training programs in the U.S. and abroad; answers reference inquiries; maintains NEDCC’s Web site; and provides free 24-hour disaster assistance. NEDCC also offers wallpaper conservation, digitization of oversize objects, digitization project planning, and digital preservation program planning.
